A Brief History
(as told by Mama Jojo)
The platform that is known today as the World Comedy Foundation first established itself in Spring of 2020 as the Rampantly comedy network. Building on an idea I had while living as a digital nomad in Los Angeles in Summer 2019, I launched the Rampantly brand as a radical experiment in collective self-promotion among indie comedians.
My goal at the time was to explore the ways in which up-and-coming performing artists could harness the tide of the new social media sharing economy to raise all their ships together. I began with an Instagram account, where I shared and tagged content from my favorite comedians. Before I knew it, those comics--among them Beth Stelling, Mike Birbiglia, Julio Torres, Nick Nemeroff, and Claire O'Kane--were reposting and engaging my account, and their fans were following me back. I was a comedy promoter! The Rampantly label was born.
Believe it or not, this website was once a page for just one, solitary comedy show, and that show was called Blue Mic. I launched the first Blue Mic show on May 19, 2020. The Blue Mic was a live digital mic that invited quarantining comedians to perform five minutes. For signups, I built a simple template on this website. Signups for each Tuesday show show would open at midnight on Wednesdays. We quickly found ourselves maxing out the list in minutes. By the end of our seventh weekly show, we had already played host our first live stream marathon for International Joke Day, enrolling 285 registered performers from 100+ cities who performed back-to-back sets for 24 continuous hours... Rampantly, indeed ;)
(You can check out the archived version of the original Rampantly site here.)
With the amazing success of our initial launch, suddenly comedians all over social media had heard of the Rampantly brand and were contacting me to ask how they could be involved. I quickly taught myself how to create dynamic webpages and hook them to databases. From there, I continued to invite my original Blue Mic comedians to launch shows for themselves on the platform using a template of the original Blue Mic website. By December 2020, I had designed the Rampantly meme machine, which generated custom show promotion for each comedian to instantly screenshot and share on social media. We were profit-sharing our ticket sales and hosting quarterly live-streamed comedy marathons with even more invited comedy labels from coast to coast. In just 18 months, the platform had grown to house more than 80 shows. At our height before the world began to "opened up again" in Summer/Fall 2021, we were collectively producing 20 weekly digital comedy mics hosted by comedians all around the USA and abroad.
All in all, our initial incubation period saw us slotting nearly 7k acts on nearly 700 comedy shows. Thanks to our savvy data capture, these records have now become folded into the heart of the World Comedy Foundation archives... including more than 1,000 hours of tape.
Moving Forward...
In just three years time, we've ramped up this platform from serving a member base of 1,800 comedians with nightly live digital comedy mics to now housing and expressing data on local comedy mics, venues and performers in more than 300 cities. (We call this the World Comedy Foundation mobile web.) Rather than producing these shows as the Rampantly comedy network, we've brought the Rampantly mark into the public domain and are now evolving the shared infrastructure so that comedians and comedy producers can collectively represent themselves and their labels, and even run their own independent shows on the World Comedy Foundation platform if they so choose.
Our platform succeeds thanks to the participation of comedians and audience like you! We invite you to explore our mobile web, to opt in to representing yourself and your comedy here, and to reach out to us with partnership ideas, growth opportunities, and any and all feedback you may have! You can contact me directly via the chat widget in the bottom corner of this screen, text me at (424) 275-7273, and email me at worldcomedyfoundation@gmail.com. Our current, honorary ombudsman for member relations is one and only comedy legend Eddie Pepitone.
It is our ultimate goal that the World Comedy Foundation can firmly establish itself as the 21st century digital crossroads for live comedy on the internet. But to make this dream a reality, we need your help. It's time for us to assemble a sustaining board of directors, kickstart a capital campaign, and execute our business plan to scale our mission. I hope you'll consider joining today and contributing to the cause!
And of course, we invite you to make a donation to the World Comedy Foundation. One-time donations can be made via Paypal to @laughtertothepeople. To contribute a sustaining donation, please reach out to us directly at worldcomedyfoundation@gmail.com. Donations are not yet tax-deductible.
Want to check out our mobile web? Navigate the tabs above to discover and contribute your data to the family of participatory labels that comprise the World Comedy Foundation family of brands. For a one-time donation, you can activate your own WCF social stack today. This is also the first step to applying for full performer representation.
And as always, thank you for everything you do to bring comedy to your communities. Let's do what we can to make live comedy a global past time again! The future of humanity may very well depend on it!
